Summer 2014 Wave 1
The program set off to a flying start as 73 young people began their journeys on the 14th of July kick off day arriving at the zone, Huddersfield at 06.30am bright eyed and excited for the week ahead. The teams were announced and after a four hour coach journey the young people arrived at Ford Castle, Northumberland already forming new friendships. From day to day the young people participated in a variety of challenging outdoor activities where there TLC skills where put to the test. Night time was a highlight as there was laughter and enjoyment shared in particular the finally disco with Alex and the team’s dance moves. As the week drew to a close, it was time to wave goodbye and breath but the memories and bonds formed where definitely ones to keep.
“Work together as a team and anything can be achieved”- Gilbert Mpofu, NCS Participant
Phase two began and we all arrived at Bradley woods, sleeping bags at the ready the first challenge was to buy the goods. NCS hit ASDA and I have never spent so long in a supermarket but each team excelled themselves in the planning and purchasing of their food for the week.
The week consisted of skill workshops in sports, media, photography, psychology and performing arts and we were very honoured to have the expertise of Hannah Whitehead and Katy Holmes, Andy Green, Phil Waring, James Doyle and Gerry Turvey to lead these with delight. We were then joined by our 5 charities representatives of Kirkwood hospice (Gabby and Marie), Leonard Cheshire (Dawn and Gemma), FMNCH (Jason and Lucy), Laura crane trust (Helen Mervill) and Mencap (Sam, Tina, Helen and Andrea). Each young person settled for the day with a passion to raise as much money as they can for those fantastic charities the message was spread and ideas where already coming alive.
Wednesday brought volunteers day and each team visited a local community organisation to lend a helping hand. Spirits where high and eyes where opened in what they can achieve and now want to achieve in the future. Dom from Barclays bank joined all teams to support this day. Dom then couldn’t stay away as Thursday they all participated in a money management skills workshop led by him. The only thing left was to transform ourselves into domestic gods and clean Bradley woods from top to bottom to pass Gillys tough inspection.
Phase 3 hit a flying start with an inspirational talk from Ken Davy and professional visits from Dual Seal Glass, Sharps Agency, The University of Huddersfield, The John Smith’s Stadium and Barclays Bank. The final hurdle was to apply all this knowledge and professionalism and devise a fundraiser event that will be as successful as the rest. Each team worked extremely hard to present their ideas to the dragon’s panel, Richard Thewlis, Gary Shuttleworth, Vikki Smith, Dom Storey, Helen Thewlis, and Richard Allen.
All in all this NCS programme was a fantastic experience, the young people they have been an absolute credit to manage, they should be extremely proud of themselves, and acknowledge that they are incredible young citizens that there community should be and are extremely appreciative of.
