Eorl Crabtree To Unveil New ‘Mural’ at the Zone
Huddersfield Giants club ambassador Eorl Crabtree will be unveiling a new ceramic mural in the entrance to The Zone tomorrow afternoon.
The mural, which has a sporting theme, has been designed and created by members of the community ranging in age from 14 to 93.
The project involved older people from Holme Valley Sharing Memories working alongside pupils from Southgate School (formerly Lydgate Special School), adults with learning difficulties from The Bridgewood Trust in Armitage Bridge and adults recovering from mental health issues from Enfield Down in Honley.
They have been working with ceramic artist Zoe Stainton, from Holmbridge, learning simple ceramic techniques to create a series of sporting figures which will be used to decorate the entrance to The Zone, an indoor sports facility which provides a variety of opportunities for fitness and children’s play areas.
Holme Valley Sharing Memories Project Manager, Sally Brown, said:
“Projects like this offer opportunities for young and old to work together in a positive environment which gives all the participants a sense of achievement.
“Everyone enjoyed sharing ideas for the design as we went along. We are so excited that Eorl Crabtree has agreed to come along and unveil our mural”.
Roger Darwin, Sports Zone Manager, commented:
“We are delighted to have the ‘Sporting Memories and Sporting Futures’ mural located within the Zone.
“The project was a great concept which offered opportunities for people of all ages to be involved. It is a fantastic piece of art and I am sure it will be well received”.
The project has been funded by Creative Minds, Kirklees Council’s Arts in the Neighbourhood programme, The One Community Foundation with support from The Zone.
Alex Feather, Creative Minds Development Co-ordinator, said:
“This has been a very collaborative project and we hope that people enjoy the mural for years to come.”
The official unveiling will take place from 1:30pm.
