What is NCS?

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that helps you build your skills for future work and life. Along with thousands of other people your age, you’ll take part in different outdoor activities, develop skills you didn’t even know you had, learn new things, help your local community and best of all make a load of new friends.

A huge part of your NCS experience is developing and growing your skills. The programme helps teach the skills employers say they are increasingly looking for in candidates such as confidence, teamwork, communication and leadership skills. NCS can help fast track your future with invaluable skills that will look not only look great on your CV, but give you the framework to show off and talk about your skills and experiences in college and job interviews. What’s more, NCS is recognised by UCAS and will help you deliver a killer personal statement.

The programme at NCS Huddersfield is split into four phases: Adventure (Away residential), Future (Home residential), Making a Difference (9am-5pm) and Graduation. All food, travel and accommodation is included.

NCS is an inclusive programme for all young people. There’s nobody that it isn’t right for and we’re yet to meet someone who hasn’t had the time of their lives – no matter how shy you may be.

We cater for all religious/cultural beliefs and are here to talk to you about how we can accommodate such beliefs at any time. If you have additional needs then we’ll make every effort, where possible, to ensure additional support is put into place to allow all young people to benefit and take part in this incredible programme.

So why not say Yes to the NCS programme at The Zone Huddersfield Community Trust.

Phase 1: Adventure

In your first week you’ll live with your team at an outdoor activity centre in either Scotland or Northamptonshire, getting to know each other and experiencing the freedom of being away from home with new friends.

These could be people you’ve never met before – people that could change your life, or you could change theirs. In this week you’ll get the chance to take part in adrenaline-fuelled activities with your team mates like: rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and archery.

Phase 2: Future

Next up, is being reunited with your group to live away from home at University style accommodation or living at Bradley Woods in Huddersfield.

This week not only will you be learning some huge life skills that can only enhance your CV, but you will also be able to choose skills that you are passionate about such as photography, editing, football coaching or even money management skills.

You and your team will meet organisations and important people from your local community whilst learning about the issues facing your community as well as developing new personal skills (team work, leadership and communication).

Phase 3: Making a Difference

Now you get the chance to put all the skills and experiences you’ve learnt into practice!

You and your team will now be agreeing on and putting together a social action project that will really make a mark on your local community.

We here at the NCS believe that you and your team have the power to make a change and are given the respect, tools and opportunities to do so.

This is your chance to be part of something amazing – plan your own project, fundraise for it and make it happen!

Go out there and be awesome together.

Phase 4: Graduation

Once you’ve completed the programme, you’re now part of the bigger NCS family.

We’ll throw you a big party to celebrate everything you’ve achieved too. Not only will you be a completely different person, but you’ll have made a huge network of amazing friends for life and done something truly inspirational in your community. You will receive a certificate signed by Theresa May to say you have completed the programme and will have the opportunity to be involved in further events and activities that NCS Huddersfield run.
